Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
